The short answer

What are digital marketing services?

Digital marketing services are the paid work that gets a business found, chosen and bought from online. That covers search, ads, social, email, content, video and the measurement that ties them together.

You can buy them from an agency or a freelancer, or run them with your own team. Most providers sell them as a monthly retainer or a fixed project.

The names change from one provider to the next. The jobs underneath stay the same: get seen, earn the click, turn the click into a customer, then keep that customer.

eMarketing Pioneer publishes a full guide to each service and tracks the news that changes them, so you know what a service should include before you pay for it.

Budget

What do digital marketing services cost?

Digital marketing services cost anywhere from about $20 a month for a single tool to several thousand dollars for an agency retainer. The price depends on the channel, so compare like with like.

ServiceTypical figureSource
SEO retainer$2,917 a month on averageAhrefs survey of 439 providers
Google search ads$5.42 a click and $66.69 a lead on averageLocaliQ and WordStream, 2026

AI tools for a solo marketerRoughly $20 a month for one assistant subscriptionOur AI marketing guide
Total marketing budget7.8% of revenue at large companiesGartner

Do this sum before you sign anything. If a lead costs about $130 in your industry and you want 40 a month, you need roughly $5,200 in ad budget before any management fee. Most disappointment with paid search starts with skipping that arithmetic.

Buying well

How to choose a digital marketing provider

Pick the provider who reports on leads and sales, not on activity. Five questions sort the good ones from the rest.

  1. What will you measure? Qualified leads and revenue beat rankings and impressions. If the report is all charts and no customers, keep looking.
  2. Who owns the accounts? The ad accounts, the analytics and the website should stay in your name.
  3. What happens in the first 90 days? Ask for it in writing.
  4. What will you not do? A provider who says yes to all fourteen services is usually reselling some of them. That can be fine, but you should know which.
  5. Does the timeline fit the channel? SEO takes three to nine months on a new site. Paid search needs a month or more of data before the bidding settles. Be wary of anyone promising faster.

Quick answers

Digital marketing services: frequently asked questions

What are digital marketing services?
Digital marketing services are the paid work that gets a business found, chosen and bought from online: search, ads, social media, email, content, video and the measurement behind them. Agencies, freelancers and in-house teams all provide them, usually as a monthly retainer or a fixed project.
What are the main types of digital marketing services?
There are 14 main types: SEO, local SEO, content marketing, PPC and paid search, social media marketing, video marketing, programmatic advertising, influencer and creator marketing, affiliate marketing, email and SMS marketing, ecommerce marketing, conversion rate optimisation, marketing analytics and AI in marketing.
How much do digital marketing services cost?
It depends on the channel. SEO retainers average $2,917 a month (Ahrefs survey of 439 providers). Google search ads average $5.42 a click and $66.69 a lead in 2026 (LocaliQ and WordStream). Large companies spend 7.8% of revenue on marketing overall (Gartner).
Which digital marketing service should a small business start with?
Start with the service that matches how your customers already buy. A local service business usually starts with local SEO and its Google Business Profile. An online store usually starts with product feeds plus email and SMS. Add a second channel only once the first one is measured.
How long do digital marketing services take to work?
Paid channels show signal within weeks, though Google advises judging Smart Bidding over a period with at least 30 conversions, usually a month or more. SEO is slower: three to nine months for a new site, after which results compound.
Should I hire an agency or run digital marketing in-house?
Hire out the work that needs specialist skill you will only use part of the time, such as technical SEO or paid search setup. Keep in-house the work that needs your own knowledge of the customer, such as content and email. Whichever you choose, keep the ad accounts and analytics in your own name.
